Menopause and oral health

Dr Martina is nearly 50 and she wants you to know this about peri-
menopause and menopause.
Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's
reproductive life. During menopause, the body goes through a series of
changes that can affect various aspects of health, including the teeth,
gums, skin, and aging. In this article, we will explore how menopause
affects these areas and what women can do to maintain their health and
well-being.
Teeth and Gums
Menopause can have a significant impact on oral health, particularly on
teeth and gums. Due to hormonal changes, women may experience a
decrease in saliva production, which can lead to dry mouth. Dry mouth
increases the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral infections.
Additionally, the decrease in estrogen levels during menopause can lead to
bone loss in the jaw, which can weaken the teeth and gums.
Other dental problems that women may experience during menopause
include:
1. Gum disease: Menopause can cause changes in the gum tissue,
making it more susceptible to infection and inflammation. This can
lead to gum disease, which can cause bleeding, swelling, and pain.
2. Tooth sensitivity: Women may experience increased tooth sensitivity
due to changes in the dentin layer, which can become thinner and
more porous.
3. Cavities: Due to dry mouth, women may be at an increased risk of
developing cavities, especially if they consume sugary or acidic foods
and drinks.
To maintain good oral health during menopause, women should:
1. Brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily.
2. Use an alcohol-free mouthwash to help prevent dry mouth.
3. Drink plenty of water to help keep the mouth hydrated.
4. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
5. Visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
Skin
Menopause can also have a significant impact on the skin. Oestrogen plays
a key role in maintaining skin elasticity, moisture, and thickness. During
menopause, oestrogen levels decrease, which can lead to a decrease in

collagen production and skin thinning. This can cause the skin to become
dry, dull, and saggy.
Other skin changes that women may experience during menopause
include:
1. Wrinkles: Due to a decrease in collagen production, women may
experience an increase in fine lines and wrinkles.
2. Age spots: Women may also notice an increase in age spots or sun
spots, which are dark patches on the skin caused by sun damage.
3. Acne: Some women may experience an increase in acne or other
skin blemishes due to hormonal fluctuations.
To maintain healthy skin during menopause, women should:
1. Protect their skin from the sun by wearing protective clothing, using
sunscreen, and avoiding tanning beds.
2. Use a gentle, non-drying cleanser to wash their face.
3. Moisturize regularly to help keep the skin hydrated.
4. Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids,
which can help improve skin health.
5. Consider using anti-aging skincare products that contain retinoids,
antioxidants, and peptides.
Aging
Menopause is a natural part of the aging process, and as such, women
may experience a variety of age-related changes during this time. These
can include:
1. Loss of muscle mass and strength: Women may experience a
decrease in muscle mass and strength, which can lead to weakness
and fatigue.
2. Changes in bone density: Due to decreased oestrogen levels, women
may experience a loss of bone density, which can increase the risk of
osteoporosis and fractures.
3. Changes in metabolism: Women may experience a decrease in
metabolism, which can lead to weight gain and a decrease in energy
levels.
Its an important time to care and love yourself.
